Indigenous Role Model of the Year: Jordan Evans

Here is the speech that releiveing Principal Jodi Rodgway deleivered at the assembly.

Jingiwallah Brunswick Heads Public School,

I would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land and pay my respect to elders past, present and emerging.

It is very special to be together again to celebrate Aboriginal histories and cultures with a whole school NAIDOC assembly and day of celebrations.

I feel so proud to be Relieving Principal of BHPS on Bundjalung land, a school where Aboriginal Education and culture is highly valued and prioritised and a school where 100% of our Indigenous students’ report feeling proud of their culture.

NAIDOC day is a time to reflect and celebrate the history, culture, and achievements of the First Nation peoples – recognising them as the traditional owners of the land.

This year’s theme of Get Up, Stand Up, Show Up is a call for our shared responsibility to strive for equality and encourages all of us to champion collaborative, and cooperative change while celebrating those who have already driven and led change in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities over generations.

I want to extend special thanks to Jennah Browning for all of her work in Bundjalung language, Aboriginal Education and cultural support for our students. Jennah is an outstanding role model for our students. She has worked out of our school for the past ten years and we have watched her continually learn and grow and she is now a teacher.
